NZ Trips Summer 2005

Instead of the usual write up of 'this happened then that happened' I thought what better than a selection of photos from the recent trip. This year the weather was much kinder to us than the previous summer when they had an overly wet year. Only one week of the trips had to contend with any major weather and they still managed to get plenty of great fish.

This selection of photos were chosen as they exemplify what to expect from a trip there. We didn't just pick the biggest fish but rather a true indication of what went on with the odd bigger fish amongst them as well as some images of the wetter, grey, colder days as well.

Already we have had two groups book for their third and fourth years respectively and dates for this coming 2005-2006 season are up and available as of now. If you interested start planning it now as we will be doing some extra advertising this year in the USA and will quickly fill the spots at the great prices we are offering. For all of you who have considered it in the past just set aside a week and join us. It will be a trip that you will never forget.

Anyway enough of the sales pitch. Enjoy the photos ...what a place it is.......

Fishing carefully to a fish on station. The wonderful Mataura in all its glory, blue skies and nymphing fish in the runs. Beautiful rivers cutting their way through the farmlands of Southland. There are just so many of them.

While the fish average three to four pound there are plenty well over this figure. You can even catch them on the grey days with a little local knowledge. The smile says it all. Great brown taken from another amazing river. No more names of locations forth coming in this report!

Craig came again this year even after doing some major damage to his wrist not long before the trip. His just reward. Some of the rivers with higher numbers of fish offer blind fishing or fishing to unseen but rising fish in stunning country.

David holding a well conditioned brown for the camera. He looks upset about having to do it or is that a smirk? Geoff pointing out a fish rising hard up against the edge. On days when the light is less than perfect Geoff has a knack of finding large fish taking duns.

Bob with the 'last chance' fish on last light on a cold day. Dennis fights a fish while Geoff waits patiently with the net.

Slowly winning the battle. Dennis is a big bloke so I guess the trout is winning the fight on points at this stage. Finally it's over. A great brown the result after a tough battle. Smiles all around.

One more of the same fish. Geoff and Dennis share a moment that will be pretty hard to forget. The outside of our accommodation which is set just back from one of the best rivers in the country.

Every night is a social event...stories swapped over a wine and dinner. "That's it Grahame, thrust it into the lens to make it bigger". OK I am just teasing now. Still a great fish and happy fly fisher.

The reason there are so many car accidents in NZ? Well you try driving when there are hundreds of rivers crossings like this one! Just watching the road is a challenge. Peter with a brilliant dark day brown. His week was the only 'bad weather' week with more cloud than sun, but they caught fish every day and some fabulous specimens.

Roger with an average fish for this particular river. Every year he and Peter want to fish this river almost every day and they invariably get a couple of these fish a day. How good is that? The browns are just so solid, wild and healthy. Hugh with yet another great fish ...his second year in a row with us and more wonderful fish under his belt.

Not a postcard. Just a digital pic snapped by one of the boys while walking the river. The south island has some of the world's best scenery. A rainbow on a dull day! A chunky rainbow at that.

Put yourself in this photo. This is the boys third year with us and they have booked next season already. Another postcard moment. It is hard to take a bad photo with a backdrop like that. A great place to sit and eat lunch if ever I saw one.

Craig with the gold at the end of the rainbow. I had to put two of him in there as he made a huge effort to get there with that wrist. A slab of rainbow...a silver torpedo. Great fun in fast water. It's not all just fish, fish, fish. Sometimes you gotta just sit back and smell the roses ...well maybe not roses but you know what I mean. A well earned break and nap in the sun before getting back into the fish.
